Review: The Backpage

This week FDTC writer Adam Holtzapfel had a chance to check out The Backpage, the new short film from Brandon Lescure.

Brandon Lescure surprised Nightmares Film Festival with The Backpage, the tale of a loveable loser and an ad for a massage in the back of the newspaper.

The film starts at a bar where we see Paul (Brendan Krick) and Shane (Joe Welkie) discussing Paul’s luck with women. From there Paul is contemplating why he’s like a leper, or a leopard according to Shane who then thinks Paul bought a cat and doesn’t give a fuck what he’s talking about.

We close in on the bar and see Paul strike out with Casey (Emily Whitworth) by saying he likes it when girls have a guys name. Shane recommends Paul getting a massage to get back on the horse.

We go to Paul’s apartment where he contemplates who to call, he decides to call Lilith (Annabel Leah). She arrives, he awkwardly tries to have a conversation, but that’s the least of his worries. You’ll have to check it out to see what trouble Paul has gotten himself into.

With great FX and a natural horror comedy feel to it, The Backpage is a must see for any fan of the genre. The rapport with the cast seems like they’ve known each other forever and it shows on screen. Just remember to be careful when you're checking out the backpage of your local paper.
