Ask anyone that knows me, and they’re likely to tell you that at some point in the past few years I’ve tried to push them to listen to Whores. more with about as much forcefulness as a door to door religion peddler. In my defense, the zealotry comes honestly - the band’s 2013 EP, Clean, represents a revelation in modern noise rock, a genre defining album that followed another equally phenomenal EP, Ruiner (2011). Granted, with a name like Whores., spreading the band’s caustic gospel hasn’t always been the easiest of endeavors, but I’ve generally found that those willing to give the Atlanta natives a shot have found the experience greatly rewarding.

Which brings us to the this year’s Gold - Whores.’ long awaited debut full length record fans have been clamouring for in the wake of multiple tour runs which have earned the band a well deserved reputation as being one of the most raucous live shows today. Wasting no time with pleasantries, Gold kicks off with one of the band’s most abrasive and uptempo tracks to date in “Playing Poor,” which fuzzes itself out into the buzzsaw riffage of the equally gnarly, “Baby Teeth.” Perhaps one of the things Whores. does best comes in the way of Christian Lembach’s dark sense of humor, which makes the band’s often self depreciating lyrical content a playful exercise in misanthropy that’s more in the realm of Pissed Jeans than it is Nirvana. Previously released live favorite, “Bloody Like the Day You Were Born” (off of Am Rep’s “Dope, Guns and Fucking In the Streets” series) gets a slight retooling with a newer version that’s heavier and downright nasty, setting the stage of the album’s closer, “I Have a Prepared Statement” - a plodding mammoth of an ender in the vein of past songs such as “Straight Down” and “I’m An Amateur at Everything.”

You’d be hard pressed to find any of the album’s ten tracks warranting a skip, as Gold features some of the band’s most polished songwriting to date, brought to life in all its noisy glory by producer Ryan Boesch (who’s previous work includes the like of the Melvins, Helmet, Fu Manchu, and Norma Jean, just to name a few). Worth every minute of the wait it took to come to fruition, Gold is very well likely going to sit at the tippy top of my “Best of the Year” list when I sit down to put that together in a few short weeks. And if you’ve made it this far into the review without catching my drift, GO OUT AND BUY THIS FUCKING ALBUM. Right now. Do it.
